From day hikers to backpackers to R.V. campers, everyone has their necessities for a trip. Whether you camp as primitive as cavemen or pull into the campsite with silverware and champagne, you should have a multitool by your side. The Leatherman Wingman is the tool of choice for myself. It's lightweight, compact, and built for the multiple jobs you may come across in the wild. There are many different types of Leatherman Multitools available ranging from $25-$180 each one with a variety of features. If you want something simple, yet versatile, the Wingman is the best choice out there. Coming in at $39.95 the Wingman offers 14 tools in its pocket sized frame.
The tool itself weighs only 7oz and is 3.8in in length when it is closed. It has a 2.6in blade, which like the rest of the tool, is made from High Carbon 420 Stainless Steel. The tools included in the Wingman are spring action needle nose pliers, regular pliers, wire cutters, wire stripper, combo knife, spring action scissors, package opener, ruler (1.5in), can openers, bottle opener, wood/metal file, Phillips screwdriver, medium screwdriver, and small screwdriver. Unlike other Leatherman tools this one does not come with a nylon sheath (but one is available if you would prefer). In its place the wingman does have the pocket clip which makes it easy to clip to a belt or like the name implies, a pocket.
When you hold the tool it doesn't feel flimsy or cheap. It has a good sturdy weight to it. It is easy to switch from the closed position to the pliers with one hand. To close the tool from the pliers you simply fold the tool handles inward and squeeze. It has a light snap as it shuts. The knife and the scissors are both accessible on the outside of the tool which allows for the rest of the tool to remain closed and to be used as a fairly comfortable handle to the knife.
This tool has everything one would need on the trail, campsite, or even just around the house but if you think you need more out of your multitool check out the other styles like the Surge ($99) which has 21 tools or the Charge ($169) which has 19 tools ranging from multi-bit screwdrivers to a saw blade.
All Leatherman tools are backed by a 25 year warranty. So if you're looking for functionality that won't break the bank, check out the Leatherman Wingman before the next time you head out into the wilderness.
